Starr House (ca. 1927)

This large Tudor Revival residence faces east to the central green, with a large curving rear lawn bordered by palms, pines, cypress, and other mature trees. The rear yard includes a pergola with Tuscan columns, and there is a detached garage adjoining a hammered iron gate by the south end of the house.

The two-story, wood-frame structure has a perimeter concrete foundation and a generally rectangular plan with truncated wings or bays at the front and south end. Two large, twostory bays project forward at the center and north end of the façade, flanking the entry, and a small one-story side bay with service entrance faces the driveway and garage. The house's main roof and subsidiary roofs are steeply pitched gables clad in green and ochre slate shingles. Walls are sheathed in smooth stucco detailed with ornamental half-timbering in the gables. A tall, massive, stucco-clad chimney adjoins the central front bay, and there is a chimney on the north side adjoined by a square bay. Most windows are multi-light casements with leaded sash and small panes (square and diamond-shaped). Ground floor windows on the central bay incorporate stained-glass transoms. A gable, three-sided bay window projects from the façade to the left of the chimney, and a three-sided oriel bay surmounts the entry.

The recessed porch, with brick stairs and flooring, is screened by a round-arched arcade; the massive front door of paneled oak is adjoined by small lancet windows. The rear elevation is less formally composed, with two rear-facing gables and a variety of windows at both levels. A balcony with French doors is set into the left gable, and there is a large patio with bronzed metal rood and wrought-iron posts. Ornamental detailing on the house consists primarily of wood trim textured with adz marks. This trim includes faux half-timbering in a variety of patterns, carved beam ends depicting lion's heads, and bargeboards carved with flower and vine motif. There is also a cast-stone surround with vine motif on the arched doorway serving the rear patio.

The principal interior spaces consist of the entry hall and the adjoining living room and dining room. The hall is dominated by a theatrical curving staircase with stained-glass window. To the right, running the full width of the house is the living room with fireplace and hand-painted murals on walls and ceiling. The dining room, adjoined by a breakfast alcove at the front, features elaborate plaster crown molding with a vine and fruit motif. The house appears to be unaltered.
